BBC Radio (1922-1930)

The first British radio station, 2MT, began making regular entertainment broadcasts on February 14, 1922from an ex-Army hut next to the Marconi laboratories near Chelmsford, Essex. This led to the creation of a sister station 2LO and subsequently the BBC. 2MT closed down January 17, 1923.

2LO began broadcasting on May 11, 1922, for one hour a day from Marconi House in London's Strand. On November 14, 1922 the station was transferred to the new British Broadcasting Company which, in 1923, took up the nearby Savoy Hill for its broadcasting studios.

Between 1922 and 1925, further stations began broadcasting from various towns and cities around the United Kingdom. Experimental long wave station, 5XX began broadcasting from Chelmsford on July 21, 1924. On July 27, 1925 it moved to Daventry and became the first British radio station to achieve near national coverage.

In 1927 the company became the British Broadcasting Corporation.

On March 9 1930 2LO was replaced by the BBC Regional Programme and the BBC National Programme.
